We have been following the construction progress of our local library as it under goes a renovation. When I take the kids to return our books, they are excited to watch the builders. Their anticipation grew when they noticed the walls and roof one morning. "Wow Mama, they're almost done!"
Along with the excitement for our new library, our little boy turned two this year! He has been entertaining himself (and his sisters) by making exuberant "Vroom, VrOOM!" noises with everything he holds, whether that's the carrot he is eating for lunch or the tea cup from the play kitchen. How could we NOT make this boy a construction theme birthday?
I challenged myself with making this party as low cost as possible. It was a fun challenge and I think I did pretty good! Total cost of decorations/props was under $20. Not bad for having only 11 days to plan. These birthday parties creep on me sometimes.
After cake and gifts, the birthday boy headed outside for a surprise....NEW sand in the sandbox with fun trucks and diggers to play with.

- Caution Cones ($2 Dollar Store)
- Caution Tape ($3.99 Home Depot)
- Twelve Polka Dot Balloons ($1 Dollar Store)
- Work apron and mini measuring tape ($1.97 Home Depot)
- Constructions signs (handmade)
- Happy Birthday banner (free print out)
- Dirt Cup "Dig In" signs (free print out)
- Two poster boards for making road center pieces ($1.38 Dollar Store)
- Eight Black cups ($1 Dollar Store)
- Two toy dump trucks and loader ($6 at fb garage sale page)
I would do this party again just for the fun of putting up the construction tape! It was a hoot! I found creative places to add it: doors, cabinets, mirrors, etc. Yellow and black were great accent colors.
Birthday boy was given a work apron with pockets for his tools. He found a mini measuring tape in one of the pockets. He spent a good 15 minutes measuring the dining room chairs, the table, Opa's shoe, and anything else in view.

We served hot dogs and finger foods for the party crew. The caution cones from the Dollar Store were used as a center pieces. My favorite decoration of the party was the dump truck tipping "4x4's" (veggie straws) into a bowl. Lemons and orange slices were added to our infused water.
Birthday treats included dirt cups with mini "Dig In" signs and a hidden gummy worm at the bottom. The chocolate cake had a "2" design made from cookie crumbs on the top. A few small trucks were added to the cake plate before birthday boy blew out his candles.
Most of the construction signs for the party were handmade. There was a "Fuel Up" next to the beverages, a "Debris" sign above the trash, and a "Porta-Potty" sign for our bathroom door. Other signage included "Speed Limit 2" and "Caution: Two Year Old Ahead". I found a free "Happy Birthday" banner online and printed it out for our party.
